Stem Cell Research: Medical Miracle or Moral Morass?
They have been likened to the dot at the top of an “i” and to tiny soccer balls. Some see them as the beginning of life, others as building blocks for medical miracles and still others as medical debris. And while most politicians would be hard pressed to define or spell blastocyst, these tiny bits of matter sit at the center of one of the most contentious policy disputes of our time – the fight over embryonic stem cell research.

Now the fight has come to New York. Ever since President George Bush banned most federal funding for most embryonic stem cell research in 2001, some states have sought to pick up the slack and so entice researchers and possible new industry. New York seems a likely location for this kind of research. Almost 55,000 people in the state work in the pharmaceutical and bio-tech industries, and the city is home to many top research institutions. With the construction of a new bio-tech center on the East Side, the Bloomberg administration hopes many private companies will bring their cutting-edge bio-tech businesses to New York.

To keep New York in the forefront of bio-technology, some members of the state legislature, including most prominently Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, hope to obtain state funding for embryonic stem cell research. On the other side, the Catholic church, which has spearheaded opposition to embryonic stem cell research here, argues that embryos used for stem cell research are a form of human life. The governor, meanwhile, remains somewhere in the middle – in favor of biotechnology in general but reluctant to support embryonic stem cell research explicitly.

As New York continues to mull the issue, some of its neighbors have moved ahead, threatening New York’s future as a center of bio-technology and, some say, delaying the day when sick people will get cures they desperately need.

WHAT IS STEM CELL RESEARCH
Although embryonic stem cells have not yet cured a single disease, it is hard to overstate the hopes that many experts have for them. Supporters of the research liken it to where antibiotics were 50 or 75 years ago. No one knows when, how, where – or even if – the major breakthroughs will come. But said Robin Elliott, the executive director of the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation, who also serves as chairman of New Yorkers for the Advancement of Medical Research, “The same could be said of any frontier of medicine…This is an area of science that is potentially one of the most exciting in the history of medicine.”

The controversy over embryonic stem cell research involves balancing hopes for improving the lives of millions against fears of a Brave New World Society where human beings will be just another manufactured product.

Most embryonic stem cells used by scientists today are a byproduct of in vitro -- literally “in glass” -- fertilization, which has led to the births of hundreds of thousands of babies since 1978. The process involves surgically removing mature eggs from a woman – generally she takes drugs to enable several eggs to mature simultaneously – and joining the eggs with sperm in a laboratory rather than in the woman’s body. The fertilized egg is then implanted in a woman’s uterus where, if all goes well, it will develop into a healthy baby about nine months later.

Women trying to become pregnant through in vitro fertilization often have to undergo several implants before the procedure works. So most women store surplus fertilized eggs, and today thousands, perhaps hundreds of thousands, of these small spherical blastocysts remain in clinics around the country.

For years, there was little use for most of the embryos, and ethicists debated what to do with them. Then in November 1998, James Thomson, a biologist at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, reported that he had isolated human embryonic stem cells. These stem cells could renew themselves, by dividing again and again. With each division, scientists could create one differentiated cell – a blood cell, say, or a brain cell – and one stem cell, which could then be used to generate more cells. These related cells -– the offspring of the original cell -– constitute a group of cells, which scientists call a "line", that share the same DNA.

To create these lines, scientists have to separate the embryo into individual cells, thereby destroying it. They must then put the individual cell in a dish and provide it with nutrients and growth factors that will both encourage it to divide and create the differentiated cells. According to one count, there are about 240 human embryonic stem cell lines around the world.

Scientists hope the lines’ ability to create specific types of cells will enable researchers to understand a variety of diseases and eventually treat illnesses that entail lost or damaged cells, such as diabetes, some cancers, Alzheimer’s disease, and spinal cord injury.

For example, in people with Parkinson’s disease the cells of their brains cannot produce enough dopamine, which is essential to the functioning of the central nervous system. Brain cells created from embryonic stem cells could replace the deficient cells, enabling the patient’s brain to again produce dopamine and the nervous system to resume functioning normally.

This potential for possible cures has won embryonic stem cell research some prominent supporters, including Nancy Reagan, whose husband had Alzheimer’s disease; Michael J. Fox, who has Parkinson’s disease; and the late Christopher Reeve, who was paralyzed as the result of a spinal cord injury.

Since the 1970s, scientists have been studying adult stem cells, extracted from blood and bone marrow, as well as from organs taken from dead bodies. Working with such cells is not particularly controversial, and they are already used in areas such as bone marrow transplants and in treating eye injuries. But these older stem cells may be more set in their ways – scientists differ (in pdf format) over how versatile they might be -- and so unable to develop into some other types of cells. And the supply of these cells, particularly those from donated organs, is limited.

Because embryonic stem cells can keep dividing and renewing themselves for long periods of time, they could exist in greater supply. The problem, though, is where to get them in the first place. For now – and this is where in vitro fertilization enters the picture – most embryonic stem cells derive from blastocysts, several-day-old embryos that have not been implanted in a uterus. And these blastocysts come from in vitro fertilization clinics.

Scientists are trying to develop other methods to produce cells with the properties of embryonic stem cells. But for now, the cells come from embryos that are destroyed in the process.

THE ETHICAL ISSUES
This troubles many people, including leaders of the Catholic Church, members of the Christian right, and some, though certainly not all, anti-abortion advocates. They see the blastocyst as a human life and believe that destroying it – even to save someone from disease — is wrong. “We don’t think a human life should ever be a means to an end,” said Dennis Powst, director of communications for the New York State Catholic Conference. “It’s not an ethical way to go about curing disease.”

To underscore the link between the blastocysts and human life, President George W. Bush last year hailed the birth of 81 children from “adopted” embryos – dubbed “snowflake babies” -- and told a gathering of the families, “There is no such thing as a spare embryo. Every embryo is unique and genetically complete, like every other human being…. These lives are not raw material to be exploited, but gifts.”

The blastocyst legally belongs to the family that created it. A small number of these families turn their embryos over for adoption or for more medical research. But most of the embryos are now simply destroyed. Supporters of stem cell research argue that using the blastocysts to help find a cure for debilitating diseases would be far more ethical than just throwing them away.

Opponents of embryonic stem cell research also fear that the need for a steady stream of stem cells for research and treatment could lead scientists to try to create human embryos by cloning. “If cloning is not part and parcel of embryonic stem cell research,” said Powst, “we question why human cloning research is part of every bill” supporting embryonic stem cell research.

While most advocates of stem cell research say they oppose cloning for reproductive purposes they do support so-called “therapeutic cloning.” In this procedure, the nucleus of an adult cell is placed in an unfertilized human egg. Development would advance until the egg became a blastocyst but, advocates say, could go no further. There is, they stress, no way such an egg could ever become a human being.

Podcasting's Demise

Then it was Anjali Athavaley from the Washington Post.Now Greg Lindsay from Business 2.0 is predicting that mainstream media will edge out the indie podcasters (which include Neville and me). Isn't it interesting that the predictions that mainstream media will dominate podcasting come from mainstream media? Here's a sample of what Lindsay had to say in his July 22 column: ...podcasting's wildcatting era is over before it ever really began. An unknown number of those Apple-made microstars will convince themselves that they hold a first-mover advantage in an untapped medium and that there is at least a modest living to be made from a popular weekly podcast that maybe, just maybe, could become a bona fide media brand. Eventually they'll fail, and they'll fail faster than ever before. Because the sense of novelty attached to streaming audio and video-the sense that one could build a brand and a studio before big media showed up to play-has already passed when it comes to podcasting. For the first time in the history of the Net, big media showed up early to play. Two presumptions drive this argument: Listeners will prefer mainstream media content Comcast, the US media giant, has made it clear (according to the Washington Post) that they consider podcasting nothing more than another channel for plain old radio. Problem is, a lot of people are fed up with the content they get from mainstream radio. Distributing content already aired over the radio airwaves as podcasts ultimately will have little appeal. The content will still be bound by the same restrictions that limited its content when it was pumped into radios, restrictions indie podcasters don't face. And it will still be the same corporate-controlled, cookie-cutter, bland, mass-market garbage that has led so many people to forsake radio altogether in favor of digital media players. Where can people hear exciting new music, for example? Certainly not on FM radio. I remember listening to FM radio in the 1970s when it was relatively new. DJs were pirates, playing whatever appealed to them. Today, FM programming is tightly managed through a relationship between station management and the big labels. My 16-year-old daughter downloaded music through Kazaa not to deny profits to artists, but for the opportunity to hear new music she simply couldn't get over the FM airwaves. The music she didn't like, she deleted, while she bought the CDs containing the music she liked. File sharing wasn't a way to steal music; it was a channel for hearing new bands. Today, podcasting assumes that role, as evidenced by the growing popularity of the brand-spanking-new Indie Podcasting Network. You won't catch any of the mainstream radio stations playing music from the Network, because what they push as podcasts will be the same programs they played over the air, containing the same repetitious drivel from JLo and Brittney and the rest of the usual FM suspects. There is no question that Apple, with its integration of podcasting into the latest release of iTunes, has promoted mainstream media podcasts. Most of the new subscriptions to podcasts through iTunes, I suspect, are from iTunes users who were unfamiliar with podcasting. They see it's available, they see a name they recognize, they subscribe. At some point, though, many of these individuals will realize they're using their digital media devices to listen to programming they found half-baked in the first place. Meanwhile, as awareness of podcasting increases, so will awareness of alternative programming. A rising tide (sorry for the cliche) lifts all boats. It won't be the first time we've seen this phenomenon at play. South Park, for instance, was originally an online feature that gained popularity with no help at all from mainstream media. It spread virally. Viral marketing will play a huge role in the spread of indie podcasting. Listeners to Endurance Radio, the podcast for endurance athletes, will tell other endurance athletes about the show. They're a community of thousands of endurance athletes. They don't need iTunes (or Clear Channel billboards, for that matter) to spread the word. And this is a show that commands thousands of dollars a month for advertising that comes from the likes of Gatorade and Fleet Sports. Which doesn't mean there's no room for both brands of podcasts. XM Satellite Radio isn't podcasting Bob Edwards' show yet, but if it ever does, I'll subscribe. I really like his show but I'm never at a radio when he's on. But I'll keep subscribing to Todd Cochrane, Adam Curry, Lee Hopkins, and other indie podcasters, too. The Internet offers unlimited bandwidth. Interest in indie podcasting is driven by a sense of novelty The novelty, Lindsay suggests, will wear off. Didn't we hear the same thing about the web in general? That it was the CB radio of the 1990s? In fact, the difference between the web and CB radio was clear: content. Indie podcasting will survive and thrive because of the value of the information it contains. Clearly, Neville and I will never attract an audience as large as ,movie reviewers Ebert & Roeper (one of the podcasts available from iTunes). However, public relations practitioners and others interested in organizational communication will never obtain content comparable to what "For Immediate Release" offers from a mainstream media source. There isn't a radio station on earth that would produce a show dealing with the subject matter that Neville and I address because the audience isn't big enough to attract the requisite advertising dollars to support it. But Neville and I don't need any advertising dollars. We're not in it for the money. We are passionate about it and, as a consequence, our audience continues to grow. I'm not the least bit worried that our humble podcast is (in Lindsay's words) "sooo over" because we represent the only option for those interested in our subject matter. And so it is with most other podcasts, including those focused on beer, wine, knitting, endurance sports, theme parks, and other niche interests. Public relations professionals have understood for years the value of narrowcasting. To be sure, many podcasts will fail. Many would have failed had mainstream media never entered the picture. A medium with the practically non-existent barrier to entry that characterizes podcasting will attract people with no talent and nothing to say. But how many television series premiere each September that don't make it to November? This isn't unique to podcasting. Good content usually survives, bad content usually does not (the continued popularity of reality television notwithstanding). No doubt, mainstream media will continue to predict the demise of indie podcasting. What else can they do when they don't understand the models that drive it and face disrputive technologies that threaten their stranglehold on what we listen to? But take it with that proverbial grain of salt. Indie podcasting will do just fine.

An MBA degree may be enough to attract Chinese employers looking for the brightest talents. But potential bosses may ask one more question: "have you taken any specialized MBA courses?" "Professional MBA education has become a trend in China's MBA education," said Tong Yunheng, president assistant of the training college of the Beijing-based People's University.
Some students who take general management courses fail to apply what they have learnt in actual work, said Wang Qiang, general manager of the Beijing Xunda International Trading Company.
"The point is business schools mainly focus on general MBA education without a strong professional basis," he said.
People's University has recently started an IT-MBA training course. It also provides MBA courses focusing on sectors such real estate, medicare and telecommunication. Many other universities with MBA education have also started courses with different majors to make the education more career-specific.
Some economically developed countries have begun to rank their business schools according to different categories of MBA education these schools offer. This shows clearly that more vocation-focused education has become an international trend, Tong said.
Despite the trend, most Chinese business schools still offer general business management courses to students in the first year and a half of study before teaching them more professional knowledge in the remaining half year.
"MBA education can help students know general management knowledge, but is half a year enough for going deeper into the professional field?" Wang said.
But, many people who choose to take MBA courses have no clear vision about their future career or they do not want to decide so early, which decreases the popularity of professional MBA courses, Tong said.
"If MBA training courses only have limited majors, the number of students that they can attract may be small."
Moreover, expensive tuition has also hindered the development of specialized MBA education.
The general MBA training course of the People's University requires 15,000 yuan (1,807 US dollars), but the number rise to 25, 000 yuan (3,012 dollars) if it is designed for medicare sector.
A financial MBA training program co-sponsored by the Tsinghua University and the Chinese University of Hong Kong was once dubbed "China's most expensive MBA course," which required 128,000 yuan ( 15,421 dollars) for enrollment.

Presentation, St. Scholastica split

Near the end of a great college basketball game Saturday in Aberdeen, Presentation College and St. Scholastica were looking for someone to carry them across the finish line.
Presentation sophomore Callie Antonsen answered the call by scoring nine of her team's last 13 points in PC's 68-65 win. There were 19 lead changes and nine ties in the game. St. Scholastica tried an unsuccessful three-pointer at the buzzer for the tie as did the PC men in their 64-61 loss to the Minnesota visitors from Duluth.
"I could have made it a little easier on us if I would have made all my free throws," said Antonsen, who ended with 23 points and 11 rebounds for PC in the women's game. "But it was a great team effort. Everyone contributed, which is what we need to do to be successful."
Especially PC seniors Bobbie Jo Bishop and Amy Schilling. Bishop turned in 16 points, nine rebounds, four assists and four steals. Schilling, meanwhile, was deadly from three-point range as she scored 16 on the strength of four threes in only six attempts.
"It was a great game to watch," said PC women's coach Adam Houdeshell. "We play basketball to play in games like that. Two evenly-matched teams went after each other, and hats off to them because St. Scholastica plays hard. They get after it just like we do."
After a 2-7 start, the PC women have now started play in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference at 2-0 and improve to 4-7 overall after the two home wins this weekend.
"This really gets our confidence going," said Houdeshell. "Hopefully, it will improve our play. We shot better tonight. Granted, it was only 36 percent (19-53), but at least we are headed in the right direction."
St. Scholastica's last lead came on senior Jen Kne's three-pointer with 2:42 left in the game. One of the top players in the conference, Kne ended with 23 points, six rebounds and three assists. St. Scholastica led 38-32 at halftime.
"We struggled through our preseason, but we play those games to get ready for our conference season," said Antonsen of Platte. "Now that we got these two wins, that gives us a lot of confidence going into the rest of the conference season."
PC lost a heartbreaker in the men's game. The hosts had the lead for most of the second half, but when PC lost it with 6 minutes left, they lost it for good. St. Scholastica had a seven-point lead with 97 seconds left, but PC rallied only to be disappointed in the end.
"We really let this one slip away," said PC men's coach Randy Jordan. "We had one of the best teams in the conference on the ropes at home and we didn't finish. I was pleased with our overall effort, but missed layups and free throws were the difference. They were a bigger team, and we did a real good job defensively on them, but we just let it get away. You have to win games like this if you are going to compete for the conference title."
St. Scholastica, whose starting lineup was 18 inches taller than PC's, put its height to good advantage toward the end of the game with timely rebounds and blocked shots. William Maupins led the visitors - whose reserves were also much taller than PC's - in both categories with 14 rebounds and four blocked shots to go along with his eight assists for the winners.
With 8.7 seconds left in the game, St. Scholastica's Derek Johnson made two free throws to put his team ahead 64-60. Before that, PC had a chance to tie the game but a turnover gave St. Scholastica the ball back.
After Johnson's free throws, PC's Jason Heien drew a foul with five seconds left. He made the first one to leave his team trailing 64-61. After a PC timeout, Heien missed the second on purpose. Marcus Robinson tipped the ball to the place where a couple of PC players were around, but St. Scholastica got the ball back.
PC fouled, St. Scholastica missed the front end of the one-and-one. PC missed a shot that was three-fourths the length of the court as the buzzer sounded.
The PC teams take their first UMAC road trip of the season next weekend when they travel to Minnesota. The Saints will play Northwestern College (women 5:30 p.m. and men 7:30 p.m.) in St. Paul Friday and Crown College (women 3 p.m. and men 5 p.m.) in St. Bonifacius Saturday. The St. Scholastica teams also continue play in the UMAC next weekend by hosting Bethany Lutheran on Friday and Martin Luther on Saturday.

A creative and versatile musician Sanjeeb Sircar began singing and playing music at the age of five. His Sitar career is now about 30 years old during which he has performed and taught music at many places in India, Europe and the USA.

Prominent among his teachers are Ustad Shujaat Khan, the late Pandit Banwari Lal of Allahabad, Dr. Raj Bhan Singh, and Dr. K.C. Gangrade. He has also attended lecture demonstrations and many live concerts of Sitar Maestro, Pandit Ravi Shankar. Drawing upon the varied sources of his training, his music reflects a synthesis of subtle diversity marked by personal expression.

In addition to playing the Classical Sitar, his main instrument, he has previously studied the Tabla, Guitar, Piano and Jazz and also plays Fusion Music.

Being a Christian he also plays and sings Christian Music.

Based at New Delhi, India, Sanjeeb works as a performer and teacher of music.

Sharon Ben-Shem was born in Israel in 1975. She got her Bachelor in Music degree from Oklahoma City University (2000) and later moved to the Chicago subburb of Dekalb to study Jazz at Northern Illinois University. She there performed as a featured vocalist with the Northern Illinois University Jazz Ensemble, directed by Ronald Carter and graduated in 2003 with a Master in Music degree.

Her music has local influences mixed with Jazz, blues, soul and folk. Her voice is often compared with that of the young Ella Fitzgerald - an important influencing image on Sharon's musical style.

Conceived as the first virtual hip-hop group, Gorillaz blends the musical talents of Dan "The Automator" Nakamura, Blur's Damon Albarn, Cibo Matto's Miho Hatori, and the Tom Tom Club's Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz with the arresting visuals of Jamie Hewlett, best known as the creator of the cult comic Tank Girl. Pop Culture Warfare

On their flat, two-dimensional surface, Gorillaz--the cartoon collective whose shambling, sunshiny single "Clint Eastwood" is speedily becoming the feel-good hit of the summer--may seem like a new-millennium incarnation of the Chipmunks, the Archies, Josie & the Pussycats, or maybe even America's latest favorite crooning 'toon, that Eddie Murphy-voiced donkey from Shrek. But the Gorillaz are hardly the warm 'n' fuzzy kiddy characters of Walt Disney or Hanna & Barbera's celluloid dreams. See, unlike Jessica Rabbit, they really are bad--they're not just drawn that way.

First, there's sociopathic scumbag band leader Murdoc, "a nasty piece of work" with green skin and even greener teeth who "really stinks." Then there's mop-topped, vacant-eyed frontman 2D, "a pretty-boy singer suffering with severe brain damage," and guitarist Noodle, "a 10-year-old, very enigmatic Japanese girl" who ingeniously Fed-Exed herself to her band audition. Finally, rounding out the lineup is drummer/MC Russel, an American gangsta who, due to an Exorcist-style demonic possession he suffered as a child, is blessed/cursed with special powers that enable him to summon up the spirits of dead musicians (and of living ones, too, including Del Tha Funkee Homosapien).

Suffice it to say, don't expect a Saturday-morning TV show, set of action figures, or limited-edition series of collectible 7-11 Big Gulp cups from the Gorillaz any time soon.

And don't expect an in-person Gorillaz interview, either. Unfortunately, none of the reclusive band members are here with LAUNCH today. But their seemingly rude no-show isn't their fault, really: The technology needed for them to travel from their storyboarded world to ours simply hasn't been invented yet.

"They arrived [onto the music scene] before the technology became there for them," explains one of the virtual group's spokesmen and mysterious collaborators, Damon Albarn of Blur, who is here with Gorillaz' other flesh-and-blood ambassador, Tank Girl creator Jamie Hewlett, to speak on the animated band's behalf. "They should be here instead of us, so we're just here to fill that gap until they can."

"You know, the technology to do what we wanna do doesn't exist, so we're sort of having to make it up as we go along. But we want to get the message across that we're Gorillaz' human representatives for now," Jamie stresses. "And then later on, they'll appear themselves. Hopefully."

So the Gorillaz--especially Murdoc, a self-declared Satanist ("more of a paganist, I would say," corrects Jamie) and star-tripping, swelled-headed control freak who once purportedly drove Damon to file a restraining order--don't mind having some comic strip artist and a Britpop heartthrob speak for them in press interviews? "Actually, they hate it!" Jamie laughs. Damon just shrugs: "Yeah, they're not that pleased about it. But they don't have much choice at the moment."

Damon and Jamie, who allegedly "discovered" the fledgling band in London's Leicester Square, discuss the music and mythology of the Gorillaz with such reverence--and with such straight faces--that it's surprisingly easy to forget that this is just a cartoon band, a novelty act, a cheeky side-project. Or is it? "It's not just a gimmicky cartoon. They're as real as any other band," Damon argues emphatically. "In a way, this is more honest, really, because celebrities and pop stars have to lie all the time about their private lives."

"Gorillaz are bred to be pop stars. That's their job. They're on this planet to be pop stars and not have a personal life, basically," explains Jamie. "They're dedicated."

So here's the official biography of this dedicated young band: Murdoc, the self-appointed Svengali and speed-freak of the group, ran into a lad named Stu-Pot--literally--when he drove his car through the window of the London organ shop where Stu-Pot was employed at the time. Poor Stu subsequently lapsed into a coma, and Murdoc, as community-service punishment for this heinous crime, was sentenced to be the irreversibly brain-damaged boy's caretaker. Another auto accident took place not much later, when Murdoc--driving recklessly to show off to some girls in a Tesco parking lot in Nottingham, while a comatose Stu-Pot vegetated obliviously in the backseat--slammed into a concrete post, thus sending the hapless Stu flying headfirst through the windshield. This second head-trauma mishap thankfully jostled Stu out of his coma (though to say he ever fully regained control of his faculties would be a gross exaggeration), and Murdoc soon decided it would be really cool to start a new band with his court-appointed young disciple, whom he rechristened with the more flashy stage name "2D." Later, Murdoc and 2D met Russel while burglarizing the Soho rap record store where he worked. Finally, Noodle mysteriously turned up to answer their "guitarist wanted" ad--looking like the secret ousted fourth Powerpuff Girl as she leapt from her Fed-Ex box, striking a kung-fu pose and brandishing a Les Paul guitar--and thus, Gorillaz were born. Oh yes, it's a typical, classic band story, something straight out of Behind The Music or E! True Hollywood Stories.

OK, so maybe it does seem a wee bit far-fetched, but further fostering the Gorillaz' fiction-as-fact illusion (along with Damon and Jamie's unflappable, unflinching earnestness) is the current state of pop music: After all, Jamie is quick to point out that over-the-top rock stars like Marilyn Manson and Eminem are "sort of like cartoon characters anyway," and then there's the glut of manufactured teen groups from Making The Band and Popstars that are so one-dimensional, they make the two-dimensional Gorillaz seem as credible as the Beatles (or at least the Rutles). So, are the Gorillaz a reaction against, or a social statement about, this prevailing prefabness in pop?

"There's a lot of manufactured bands, and they're all manufactured very poorly. We just thought, if you're going to manufacture something, why not do it properly?" Jamie reasons.

"It would be a lot easier to do things in a more conventional way, but we're trying to change something about the popular culture we live in, because we're not happy with it," says Damon, launching into a recitation of the Gorillaz Manifesto. "We think it's got some sinister aspects to it which are conditioning people in a really negative way. And that's what we're doing this for."

Sinister aspects? What unspeakable evils have these cartoon superfriends come to rescue the "pop"-ulation from, exactly? "The lack of intelligence and the sort of dumbness that's encouraged," gripes Damon. "When pop music becomes generic--in whatever form, whether it's hip-hop, heavy metal, or just straightahead pop--it starts to dumb down, and it just loses any soul. It doesn't really give a world view."

Gorillaz' music is nothing if not worldly. Encompassing the aforementioned hip-hop, metal, and pop along with punk, funk, trip-hop, hot-buttered soul, rump-shakin' disco, Beasties/ Beck-style indie-rock, U.K. garage, U.S. electro, Jamaican dub and reggae, and saucy Latin rhythms, Gorillaz have come up with a phat, phunky-phresh, old-school-meets-new-school sound that they've imaginatively termed "zombie hip-hop."

Of course, much of the international flava of Gorillaz' self-titled debut can be credited to their many collaborators, including Ibrahim Ferrer of the Cuban combo Buena Vista Social Club, Miho Hatori (Noodle's alter ego) from the East-meets-West duo Cibo Matto, West Coast rapmaster Del Tha Funkee Homosapien (channeled telepathically by Russel), Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth from the Talking Heads /Tom Tom Club, Canadian turntablist Kid Koala , Jamaican dub legend Junior Dan, and Deltron 3030/ Dr. Octagon/Jon Spencer producer Dan "The Automator" Nakamura .

With such a stellar supergroup assembled for their first album, the Gorillaz will certainly have a hard time topping themselves when it comes time to re-enter the studio (yes, contrary to popular belief, Gorillaz is not a one-off, so get ready for a sequel). But the crafty band members are already full of big ideas: Murdoc has repeatedly expressed interest in working with his idol, Sir Ozzy Osbourne, and of course, Russel's psychic ability to break on through to the other side could lead to countless collaborative possibilities. "You never know what is gonna pop out of Russel's head, so that's a bit unnerving," Damon remarks wryly.

"Russel can house the spirits of dead singers, so we're hoping that we might be able to work with Tupac, Elvis, Frank Sinatra...whoever," Jamie adds excitedly.

In the meantime, collaborating with his animated protégés has reanimated Damon's own career and creativity. "I've never had so much fun in my life, just being able to work with whoever I want to, whoever really inspires me," he marvels. "Now I can, because there's no actual commitment except for making music. This is a way of remaining underground and simultaneously being mainstream."

If Gorillaz continue to wage pop-culture warfare as aggressively as they have been thus far (their album's been a fixture in the U.K. top 10 for three months now, and in the U.S., it's already charted higher than any previous album by Damon's "real band," Blur), they'll no doubt soon infiltrate the mainstream completely, paving the way for all sorts of groundbreaking virtual bands. At least, that's what Damon hopes/predicts. "I think in a few years' time this will be the norm, so we just tried to set a blueprint that was of sufficient quality," he declares. "Kids are gonna be not only making music on computers, but they're gonna be creating amazing sorts of crazy images to go with that. And that will eventually mutate into a whole new kind of band, and hopefully, a whole new form of entertainment."

"People won't go to concerts anymore. They'll just spend their days glued to their computer screens," Jamie prophesies.

However, these days, people are still going to concerts, so Damon and Jamie figured the Gorillaz should deliver their music to masses via a proper live gig. And so, on one surreal night in March 2001, the Gorillaz came to life at London's Scala nightclub. Actually, Murdoc, 2D, Russel, and Noodle were larger than life, their Technicolor likenesses towering above the confounded capacity crowd on a 50-foot monitor while anonymous musicians played behind the video screen, shielded from view.

"Actually, I'd like to think that the audience is actually behind the screen," postulates Damon. "It's all reversed. You don't see a band, although they are there. Because you can't see the musicians, you don't know who is there--no one knew Ibrahim Ferrer was there, or whether I was there. There was a sense of mystery about it."

Amazingly, the majority of the Scala audience seemed to readily accept the fact that Damon and his famous co-conspirators planned on keeping their superstar identities concealed for the duration of the evening. "There were a few people who kept shouting, 'Show yourself!'" admits Jamie. "But most people bought into it." Somehow, Gorillaz made the impossible possible, further blurring (no pun intended) the line between the second and third dimensions, and somehow, it all worked.

In fact, so far, most everything the Gorillaz have done has worked, in wondrous ways that non-believers in the three-dimensional world could have never predicted. "If it keeps going this way, hopefully in a year's time we can do concerts and have four characters onstage and some guy sitting up on the roof with a big deck of buttons twiddling things," Jamie contemplates ambitiously. "The fact that it's working means now we have to push it farther and farther. We sold nearly a million singles in Britain alone, and in Europe, it's on the top of the charts everywhere. So without boasting, it's working so far."

He then adds incredulously, "I mean, we had little 12-year-old kids jumping around the playground to Gorillaz and getting into dub and reggae...as opposed to Westlife and Britney Spears!"

Speaking of kids, what about Damon's own 2-year-old daughter? Does she favor Gorillaz over the teenybop Britney brigade as well? Very likely so, since for her, the line between the cartoon world and this world seems particulary blurry: Says Damon with a smirk, "Whenever she sees 2D, she thinks it's me."

The iPod nano is already behind the cutting edge — and that's good news. What makes this slender device so cool, of course, is Apple's use of so-called flash memory chips, which can hold songs and other data even if the battery runs out. Hard-disk drives in the bigger iPods do the same thing, of course, but they're bulkier and, because they have mechanical parts, are prone to crashing in the same way PC drives do.

Apple put 16 2-gigabit flash memory chips in each iPod Nano — enough to hold 1,000 songs. But the 2-gigabit chips are already obsolete. After the Nano hit the shelves, Samsung introduced a single flash-memory chip that holds 16 gigabits — eight times more than the iPod chips.

Death Cab for Cutie might be best known for providing just the right tune at the right moment for TV shows like "The O.C." and "Six Feet Under," but the Bellingham, Wash., group has been writing the soundtrack for numerous real-life scenes since 1997, when it was just a front for singer-guitarist Ben Gibbard (also the man behind the electro-pop side project the Postal Service). After four buzz-generating independent albums, the band made the major-label leap with its latest CD, "Plans," and a dreamy pop single, "Soul Meets Body," that's perfect for your own personal crying scene. Death Cab for Cutie plays tonight and Monday at the SF Weekly Warfield.

Q: Just how many breakups have you been through?

A: This month?

Q: That would be a good place to start.

A: The total tally is probably, ooh, seven or eight in my adult life.

Q: You almost have an album per breakup.

A: Almost. After a couple more records I don't know what we're going to do. I guess I'm just going to have to keep breaking up with people. But I kind of want to hold on to this one I've got right now. So if it's really a record for each breakup, maybe that means we've only got three more albums and then we're done.

Q: Are you a fan of the dramas that feature your band's music?

A: I watch "Six Feet Under," but that's about it. I mean, "The O.C." is a fine enough show, but I never feel inclined to watch it, I guess.

Q: My favorite is the Kaiser commercial. I feel like that really speaks to me.

A: Right. That's a Postal Service song. We figured what better way to attract new listeners than through a massive insurance company?

Q: Is Death Cab for Cutie on a mission to make lite rock cool again?

A: What's really at the core of what we're doing right now is to try to bring back that smooth, early- to mid-'70s soft-rock style that was all over radio. We also want to bring AM radio back. We want to make it a viable bandwidth again.

Q: Every band needs a good cause like that.

A: There are a lot of soft-rock bands that hide behind the guise of indie, like Belle & Sebastian and Kings of Convenience. We're all purveyors of this movement.

Q: If Kings of Convenience are the new Simon & Garfunkel, what does that make Death Cab for Cutie?

A: We're more the Paul Simon solo era.

Q: But you haven't even gone to Africa.

A: That's true. We haven't been dredging the depths of Africa for our musical palette. When our creative well runs dry, we'll just go and drain somebody else's. The problem is, Paul Simon already pillaged Africa, pillaged South America and made a couple of really great records -- but what continent can we go to? I think the only continent that we have to pillage from is Antarctica. I don't think they even necessarily make music down there.

Q: Do you think you will ever build a time machine to go back and change the band's name?

A: That would be on the short list of things to do with a time machine. You kind of make your own bed, but at the same time, if eight years ago I knew how many times I had to explain where this dumb-ass name comes from, we would have changed our name to the Killers or something. (The name is the title of a song performed by the Bonzo Dog Band on the soundtrack to the Beatles' 1967 movie "Magical Mystery Tour.")

Q: Is there anything to be done about your bass player's Oompa Loompa hair?

A: He has been wearing a hat recently. But people are concerned that Atlantic Records has been making him wear the hat.

Q: What a sellout. Can't he just part it to the side?

A: I think if that would have worked, it would have been done years ago.

The phrase "sex, drugs and rock and roll" is largely an exaggeration. For most bands, "rock and roll" means driving endless miles in a cramped, broken-down van to play for a few disinterested fans and even less money.

This is especially true for indie rock bands, bands that aren't signed on a major label. "Our Band Could Be Your Life," by noted rock journalist Michael Azerrad, tells the tales of 13 prominent indie-rock bands from the '80s and '90s.

Profiled in this book are Black Flag, Minutemen, Mission of Burma, Minor Threat, Hüsker Dü, the Replacements, Sonic Youth, Butthole Surfers, Big Black, Dinosaur Jr., Fugazi, Mudhoney and Beat Happening. Their music runs the gamut from thrashy punk to noisy guitar-gasms to almost traditional rock and roll.

"Our Band Could Be Your Life" offers great commentary from the artists involved and a look at the bonds formed among band members. They discuss their reasons for living the hard indie rock life and their struggles with unscrupulous managers and club-owners.

I felt like I was personally in the tour van with them, discussing their favorite music and witnessing their squabbles.
Sonic Youth, Fugazi, Mudhoney and the Butthole Surfers continue to release new music to this day. Unfortunately, the other bands split up amid personality conflicts and the increasing costs of recording.

Azerrad also offers some commentary on the state of indie rock after Nirvana's 1991 breakthrough. He vividly shows the ways this genre of music changed, for better and for worse. He chooses to cover only the indie periods of the bands who went on to major labels, trailing off the stories after this big jump.

I thought keeping the focus solely on indie rock was a stroke of genius on his part. After all, there are many places to look to find out what happened to those bands after their move to major labels.

For many people, indie rock is the only kind of rock music worth listening to, and "Our Band Could Be Your Life" is a great profile of the unsung heroes of today's alternative-rock movement. If you feel personally insulted by the cynical recording industry, MTV or the endless stream of Britney-Aguilera-Timberlake pop-crap wannabes, this book is well worth a read. EEEE

10 guidelines for B2B podcasting

With that in mind, I started jotting down some guidelines for B2B podcasting. As luck would have it, I wound up with 10:

Be relevant

If you're considering a B2B podcast, you've probably already given some consideration to a theme and an audience. One of the no-brainer podcasts no business has A podcast for this audience helps elevate your content above the dozens or even hundreds of other companies sending content through traditional channels. It's not enough to just focus on this audience; you have to add some value. You don't need to disclose material information for this podcast to be relevant, but you should offer insights into why your organization is a worthy investment. You might, for instance, pick a focus of your R&D efforts and give it a bit more attention that usual, talk about customer satisfaction metrics, or conduct an interview with one of your thought leaders.

Under some circumstances, you might be tempted to use your podcast to address issues that have reared their ugly heads. It's easy to view the podcast as a broad business communication tool. It's not. Podcasting is all about narrowcasting, particularly when you're dealing with a business audience. Resist the temptation to digress or risk losing an audience that listens because of the highly focused content you deliver. Consider pixel advertising, which delves into the future of some aspect of life (homes, cars, shopping) through the eyes of two company thought leaders on the subject. How many people would unsubscribe if IBM used an episode to explain its labor issues? That's not why people subscribed.

Avoid fluff

I've heard some comments recently suggesting that business podcasts should be more entertaining. One pundit went so far as to suggest that business podcasts should play songs. Don't you believe it. Someone who listens to the IBM podcast wants to know what the future holds and they want to hear it from experts working on real-world applications. Listeners to my podcast may argue, "You play music." Yes, indie rock bands play a podsafe tune at the end of every show. But we're not a B2B podcast; there is no business behind our show. (We're just two guys doing a podcast.) We also save the music for the end of the show, so those who don't want to hear music can stop listening when the music starts. (Incidentally, we play music to support the independent artists whose efforts are one of the biggest drivers of podcasting and because it's our show and we want to.)

Be infotaining

While you don't want to turn your B2B podcast into a top 40 music show, you do want to employ enough entertainment elements to make it interesting to listen to. Solid content is not compelling if it is delivered by a lone monotonous voice. Use musical intros and outros, introduce new features, and generally take advantage of the medium. Adopt a format for your show. "For Immediate Release" is a co-hosted discussion with audio commentary from other sources. You could do an interview show, a panel discussion, or commentary by company thought leaders. Listeners get to like a format. They also like it if you shake it up from time to time.

Build and engage community

There's a podcasting myth that suggests one of podcasting's great limitations is its one-way, top-down nature. Hogwash. Podcasts routinely build communities of listeners the members of which interact with the podcaster. Adam Curry's Daily Source Code offers a great example. Curry expressed an interest in biodiesel and asked for input. Listeners sent what they knew by email and audio comment. Other listeners commented on what the first round of listeners said. Curry responded and asked more questions. The biodiesel discussion has been going on for weeks on DSC. Neville and I have worked hard to make "For Immediate Release" listener-driven, with as much as half of each show based on themes raised by our listeners.

There are no competitors...okay, there are some competitors

If you spend your time bashing your competitors, your listeners will unsubscribe in droves. They're coming for insights, not an us-vs.-them commercial. As my mother (and yours, too, probably) used to say, if you can't say something nice about somebody, don't say anything. In fact, if a competitor introduces a podcast or says something worthwhile in a blog, point to it. Neville and I don't see the growing number of PR-focused podcasts as competition. We even link to them in what we call our "podroll," a list of other communication-themed podcasts on our show blog. Just because your audience is made up of customers doesn't mean you shouldn't recognize the interconnectedness of the medium and your listeners' hunger for useful and interesting content.

Not that I think Boston Consulting Group would ever welcome a new podcast by McKinsey & Company into the podosphere. Short of that, though, it pays dividends to be part of a bigger podcasting community.

Don't advertise or sell

Nobody wants to subscribe to and download a commercial about online flower delivery. You can brand your product, service, or company by being the provider of useful information. You should avoid turning your podcast into an advertisement at all costs, regardless of what your throwback marketing VP wants.

Be authentic

Businesses often are inclined to overproduce their media, striving to be as good as - or better than - mainstream public media. I remember talking to the manager of one company's video production operation who said his baseline was a local newscast; his work could never, no matter what, be worse than a typical local newscast. While podcast listeners do want to be entertained, their primary interest is in content, not polish. A podcast hosted by voice talent reading a script will be dismissed, while listening to a real engineer or designer or brand manager -- replete with all his "ums" and "uhs" -- will be compelling, as long as he's talking about something the listener cares about. (Besides, you can edit out the worst mistakes.)

Be mindful of your listeners' time

Depending on whom you talk to, indie podcasts shouldn't exceed 20 or 40 minutes. Neville and I routinely run 70 to 80 minutes. But again, while "The Hobson and Holtz Report" is about business, it's not from a business. With a business podcast, you're asking your customer (or prospective customer) to give her attention to your organization's content. It's an exchange. Don't ask for too much of it. Make sure you fill the time you do have with something useful enough to make the exchange worthwhile.

Integrate your podcast into the blogosphere

Outside the pseudo podcasts from the mainstream media (repackaged pre-broadcast radio content), you'll be hard-pressed to find a podcast that doesn't have an associated blog. So far, most of the business podcasts haven't emulated this practice with the exception of GM, where the Fastlane podcast is just part of the Fastlane blog. Your podcast blog page contains show notes, another tactic common among indie podcasters but missing from businesses. Listeners appreciate the hell out of good show notes. Most important, but inviting comments on each show, you more effectively build that community of listeners naysayers insist you can't build with a podcast.
